DE Pregnancy

🤰 Pregnancy

Whether it’s you or someone on your team — congratulations! šŸŽ‰
This is such a special and exciting time, and we’re here to support you every step of the way — before the birth, during leave, and when you return to work.

šŸ¼ Maternity Leave

Pregnancy, childbirth, and the first few months of a new baby’s life are deeply meaningful (and often overwhelming!). That’s why both the law and Flink offer special protections and support during this time.

šŸ“Œ Step 1: Let Us Know

Please raise a ticket or email [email protected] as soon as your pregnancy is confirmed.
Attach a certificate from your doctor or midwife with:

  • Your full name

  • Estimated due date

  • Note if it’s a multiple or premature birth

Also inform your manager directly.

āž”ļø Once we receive this, the People Team will send you a formal confirmation with all your rights and obligations.

šŸ—“ļø When Does Maternity Leave Start?

  • Standard: 6 weeks before your due date

  • You can choose to work past that point if you feel up to it — just speak with your manager. You can change your mind at any time.

  • Legally, you are not allowed to work for 8 weeks after birth, or 12 weeks in the case of multiple or premature births.

šŸ’ø What About Pay?

If you're covered by statutory health insurance, you’ll receive:

  • Maternity benefit (Mutterschaftsgeld) from your insurer

  • A top-up payment (Arbeitgeberzuschuss) from Flink to match your regular pay

āœ… To ensure everything runs smoothly, please inform the People team in advance.

šŸ‘¶ After the Birth

First of all: Congratulations! šŸŽ‰ Please send a scan of the birth certificate to [email protected] as soon as possible.
If the child has a different surname, include the acknowledgement of paternity.

For further information, please contact:

  • Please contact your health insurance directly: for questions about statutory health insurance benefits in the event of pregnancy and maternity

  • The Federal Social Security Office (Bundesamt für Soziale Sicherung): for questions on maternity benefits for women with private or family insurance
for women with private or family insurance: the competent labour inspectorate or the state occupational

  • Labour Protection Office: for questions on the application of the Maternity Protection Act (MuSchG)(overview at: www.bmfsfj.de)

  • The Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth: for an overview of the
supervisory authorities for each federal state, and the maternity protection guide, which is primarily
for pregnant and breastfeeding women and provides detailed information on rights and duties.

DE Parental Leave

Parental Leave

Parental leave gives you the opportunity to care for and bond with your child. Each parent is entitled to up to 3 years of leave and your job remains protected.

šŸ“ How to Apply

  1. Send a written request (with a wet signature) to the People team.
Include the start and end date of your parental leave.
šŸ’” Tip: Align your leave dates with your child’s life months (e.g., birth date to birth date), not calendar months. This helps when applying for parental allowance (Elterngeld).

  2. Deadlines to apply:

    • Leave within the first 3 years of the child’s life: 7 weeks' notice

    • Leave between age 3–8: 13 weeks' notice

  3. Submit via post or in person:
    Flink SE
    z.H. HQ People Team
    Brunnenstraße 19–21
    10119 Berlin

āœ‰ļø You’ll receive a written confirmation from the People Team.

šŸ’¶ What is Elterngeld (Parental Allowance)?

Parental allowance is optional, but many parents apply since there’s no salary during parental leave.

  • It’s based on your net income before the birth (usually ~65% but max. 1,800.00€/month)

  • Paid by child’s life month, not calendar month

  • You can apply at your local parental allowance office (Elterngeldstelle)

šŸ’” Align your leave dates with the child’s birth month to avoid benefit reductions.

You can apply for parental allowance in writing at your local parental allowance office (Elterngeldstelle).

šŸ›”ļø Health Insurance During Leave

You’ll stay covered just like before:

  • Statutory insurance → coverage continues

  • Private insurance → coverage continues

āœ… Please check with your insurer - premiums may change during leave.

🌓 Vacation & Parental Leave

Per §17 BEEG, your vacation entitlement can be reduced by 1/12 for each full month of parental leave — unless you're working part-time during that time.

šŸ’” If possible, try to use your vacation before your leave begins to avoid loss or complications.

šŸ•’ Want to Work Part-Time During Parental Leave?

Yes, it’s possible! You can work up to 32 hours/week during parental leave (§15(4) BEEG).

To request part-time work:

  • Submit a written application to your manager

  • Inform the People Team

  • Use the same notification deadlines as parental leave

šŸ“Œ Include:

  • When you want to start

  • How many hours/week (e.g., 20)

  • Preferred schedule (e.g., ā€œMon–Wedā€ or ā€œmorningsā€)

ā³ According to the BEEG, the employer must decide on the application within 4 weeks. Please note that while we strive to accommodate these requests, an application for parental part-time can be rejected if urgent operational reasons stand in the way. After parental leave, you can return to your regular working hours.

DE Special Leave

šŸ“ How to Request Special Leave in SAP

For all types of special leave (except child sick leave and educational leave):

  1. Log in to SAP

  2. Under Time Type, select "Special Leave"

  3. Scroll down to the "Leave Type" dropdown

  4. Select the relevant type of special leave (e.g. marriage, bereavement, relocation, etc.)

For child sick leave and educational leave, please follow the separate instructions below.

Here’s an overview of additional leave types available to Flink employees. For any questions or special circumstances, please connect with your manager and the People Team.

šŸ’ Marriage Leave
You are entitled to 1 paid day off for your own wedding.

šŸ‘¶ Birth of a Child (Non-Birthing Parent)
Non-birthing parents are entitled to 1 paid day off following the birth of their child.

šŸ–¤ Bereavement Leave
In the unfortunate event of the loss of a close relative, you are entitled to 1 paid day off.

We want to be as supportive as possible during this difficult time. If you feel you need more time, please don’t hesitate to speak with your manager and the People Team.

šŸ‘¶ Caring for a Sick Child (Kinderkrankengeld):

We understand that family comes first, especially when a child is unwell. In Germany, you are legally entitled to take time off to care for your sick child, with payment for this time covered by your health insurance provider. This is known as Kinderkrankengeld.

Entitlement: As a single parent, you are entitled to 30 days of leave per child, with a maximum of 70 days total per calendar year if you have several children.

To ensure a smooth process, please follow these steps:

  1. Inform Your Manager: Notify your direct manager as early as possible on the first day you need to stay home with your child.

  2. Get a Doctor's Note: You must obtain a medical certificate for your child ("Ƅrztliche Bescheinigung für den Bezug von Krankengeld bei Erkrankung eines Kindes") from the first day of absence. This is a specific form for child sickness, not the standard adult sick note (AU).

  3. Log Your Absence: Enter your absence in SAP SuccessFactors using the absence type "Sick leave Child Unpaid". Please attach a copy of the doctor's certificate directly to the request.

  4. Claim from Insurance: You must submit the certificate to your health insurance provider to claim your payment (Kinderkrankengeld). Flink will grant you unpaid leave for this period, and your payment will come directly from your insurer.

šŸ“¦ Relocation Leave
If your relocation (to a different city or country) was initiated by Flink, you’re eligible for 1 day of paid leave within your first 3 months.

āš–ļø Jury Duty
Leave depends on the number of days required by the court.
šŸ“„ Please submit the official jury duty document to the People team.

šŸ“š Educational Leave ("Bildungsurlaub")

Employees who have been with Flink for over 6 months and regularly work 5 days a week are entitled to 5 days of training time per year. In Berlin, educational leave ("Bildungsurlaub") is primarily intended for professional or political education and personal development. It should involve improving professional skills, language courses, or other recognized personal development programs that align with professional or civic engagement.

How to take Education Leave:

  1. Align with your manager for planning.

  2. Raise a ticket to the People Team with proof of attendance.

  3. Once approved by the People Team, request time off in SAP under:

Important facts:

  • Employees cover the costs of the course themselves. You may also choose to use your L&D budget to cover course costs — as long as the L&D policy is followed and the request is approved in advance.

  • Unused educational leave does not roll over.

  • The employer must be notified as early as possible, but at least 6 weeks before the start of the training measure, as to when the training time is to be taken.

  • The notice of recognition from the competent senate administration or, in the case of events deemed to be recognised within the meaning of § 10 (5) or § 10 (6) BiZeitG, the confirmation from the educational institution must be submitted.
