Managing the battery cabinet

This guide describes the general guidelines for handling the battery cabinet safety, along with the emergency procedures in case of emergency.

It's important the Hub Managers (HMs), Shift Leads (SLs) and Ops Associate Plus (OA+) are aware of these processes, so they can avoid potential fire hazards and know how to act during emergencies.

Safety guidelines

Charging bicycle batteries poses a fire hazard. For safety, always charge batteries only in the designated fireproof Aesco battery cabinets:

  1. Always keep cabinet doors closed.

  2. Do not stack batteries on top of or too close to each other.

  3. Disconnect all charging cables in the cabinet from the power supply every Saturday evening without exception.

  4. Follow the charging cabinet manual at all times. This manual is available in the Hub.

  5. Never wedge open the cabinet doors with any object. This can damage the self-closing mechanism, preventing doors from fully closing in a fire emergency.

  6. Ensure cabinet doors are not obstructed by any objects at any time.

  7. Store defective batteries only in the cabinet’s lower compartment, but do not cover or stack them.

  8. Mark defective batteries with a clearly visible sticker for easy identification.

  9. Store lithium-ion batteries only in bikes or the battery charging cabinet.

  10. Do not charge or store batteries outside the designated safety cabinet.

  11. If a cabinet is unavailable at a location, never leave batteries charging unattended, especially overnight.

Emergency procedures: battery cabinet warning lights

🟡 Warning: internal temperature exceeds 50°C

  • Signal: red LED on, slow beeping, relay contact closes.

  • Actions:

    1. Do not open the cabinet!

    2. Disconnect the cabinet from the power supply.

    3. Observe for any smoke or unusual smell.
      ​

      1. If smoke or smell is detected: call the fire department.

      2. If no smoke or smell is detected: reconnect the cabinet to the power supply.

    4. Create a repair request.

🟠 Alarm level 1: smoke detector triggered

  • Signal: red LED on, medium beeping, relay contact closes.

  • Actions:

    1. Do not open the cabinet!

    2. Do not disconnect the cabinet from the power supply.

    3. Observe for any smoke or unusual smell.

      1. If smoke or smell is detected: Call the fire department immediately.

    4. Create a repair request.

🔴 Alarm level 2: internal temperature exceeds 70°C plus smoke detector triggered

  • Signal: red LED on, fast beeping, relay contact closes.

  • Actions:

    1. Do not open the cabinet!

    2. Do not disconnect the cabinet from the power supply.

    3. Immediately call the fire department.

    4. Create a repair request.

Reporting issues

  • If your battery cabinet is damaged, submit a request under Submit a request > Repair request > Battery charging cabinets.

  • If a bike’s battery is damaged, submit a report under Submit a request > Fleet issue/missing bike > Problem with batteries, power adapters, locks, or keys and place the battery in the designated storage area for broken batteries.
